Holiday Guide

Come and visit the Italian mountains with its Stelvio National Park and enjoy a rural escape with plenty of nature.
BORMIO lies at the top of the Valtellina valley, a transverse valley of the Italian Alps, running east-west from the lake of Como to the Ortler. While Bormio is located on 1.225m above sea level in a sunny basin where the valleys Valdisotto, Valdidentro and Valfurva meet, its surrounding mountains with their snow caps rise to over 3.000m, a beautiful set for your holidays.
Due to the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships of 1985 and 2005 and the annually held FIS World Cup Men’s Downhill race at the end of December, Bormio is internationally known as a ski destination but it has as well a long tradition because of its hot spas , visited already 2.000 years ago for a relaxing break by the Romans.
As you walk in the streets or stop at one of the many shops, you can notice the Italian lifestyle in the old historic town. Bormio has preserved its unique medieval town centre with its historic buildings and traditional fairs. Moreover you will discover a varied culinary heritage and passion for good eating and drinking.

Bormio and its surroundings make for an excellent destination for your holidays and offer to sports lovers, nature lovers, families and groups the perfect setting to relax and practice sports, to enjoy nature and excellent food.

Indulge in authentic and traditional Italian cuisine and try the wines of Valtellina. The most common wine here is Valtellina Superiore, mostly entirely made out of the Nebbiolo grape. Moreover there are Sassella, Grumello, Inferno and Valgella.

Local specialty such as pizzocheri match perfectly the powerful wines grown in the mountainous and dramatic area of the Valtellina valley. Other famous foods of Valtellina include polenta, sciatt, bresaola, apples, honey and D.O.P. cheeses such a bitto.

We invite you to expand your culinary horizons by taking part at one of the many tastings, enjoying delicious specialties at your hotel or dining out in one of the many fine local restaurants.

Bormio and its surrounding valleys are a popular tourist destination in the Italian Alps known for their unique characteristics, with plenty to offer for an unforgettable holiday.
In winter season there are lots of ski sport - and not only - activities to enjoy: skiing and snowboarding on pistes with a total length of 213 km and cross-country skiing with 87 km of tracks, two snow-parks for snowboarders, ice-skating at the ice hall of Bormio or on two outdoor ice-rinks at Isolaccia and Santa Caterina, snowshoeing, icefall climbing and husky sleigh riding. In summer there is skiing in the summer ski resort Stelvio from end of May until beginning of November, playing nine holes of Golf, horseback riding, fishing, trekking, road cycling and mountain biking in the Stelvio National Park.

Three thermal spa centres with natural hot springs (37°-43°C), already known to the ancient Romans, offer relax and wellness throughout the year. Bormio Terme provides with water slide and water games a great day out for all the family.

Further to the restaurants and bars in the ski area and at the bottom of the famous Stelvio piste, the medieval town centre, which is largely traffic-free with narrow, cobbled streets and colorful stone facades, is a beautiful place to gather with friends and enjoy après-Ski in one of the atmospheric cafés.

Italy is less pricey than most Alpine countries and Bormio is less expensive than most Italian resorts. So make use of Bormio’s central position in the upper valley to visit nearby Switzerland or South Tyrol. There are plenty of ideas for days out with the bicycle, motorcycle, car or camper.

Do not forget, there is lots to do all year round - whatever the weather. Check out our calendar of the main events for ideas.

Due to its central position Bormio is easy to reach via the mains routes from Switzerland, Austria and South Tyrol or from Lower Valtellina or Valcamonica. Most of the passes are closed in wintertime but coming from Switzerland you will find open year around the Bernina Pass or the Livigno road tunnel. As road conditions can change quickly, check current road closures and other weather-related information, especially for the passes Umbrail and Forcola.

Closest railway station is Tirano (30km) which connects the upper valley with St. Moritz (Switzerland) and Milan. There is a direct bus transfer Tirano to Bormio in less than one hour.
The main airports of Lombardy are all connected to the central railway station of Milan ‘Milano Centrale’ by bus.

During the winter season there are daily direct connections into the valley from/to Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) and Milan Malpensa (MXP) with the bus company MT Bus.
